In addition an upper chest breathing pattern will tend to pull the first rib upwards, further reducing the size of the thoracic outlet, with the potential to cause TOS. When the shoulders and clavicle pulled forward and down for prolonged periods, this may result in a reduced space in the thoracic outlet. The result of this imbalance (or perhaps the cause of it) is poor posture. The opposing muscles are usually weak (rhomboid major and minor and trapezius). These include the scalenus anterior and medius and the pectoralis major and minor and the subclavius. Muscle imbalances occur when particular muscles may become short and tight due to overuse of poor posture. Muscle imbalances, posture, breathing and TOS Physiotherapy plays a vital role in this form of the condition. Muscle imbalances can also alter the position of both the first rib and the clavicle contributing to nerve compression, pain and numbness in the arm. Excessive tension or hypertrophy of the adjacent muscles may cause direct compression. In some cases it requires surgery.įunctional Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (also known as Physiological Thoracic Outlet Syndrome) is very common condition in which prolonged postures (such as sitting at a computer with shoulders hunched forwards and down) may result in compression of the nerves of the brachial plexus. Investigations such as a CT scan or MRI can help with diagnosis. Physiotherapy may still be indicated, however consultation with a specialist medical practitioner may be advisable. This may be due to an abnormality present from birth, such as an extra rib attaching to the lower cervical spine or may be the consequence of injury. Structural Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a rare condition, which involves bony restriction of the space through which the nerves and blood vessels pass. Symptoms are often aggravated by overhead activities (such as hanging out washing or sleeping with the arm overhead) put traction on the brachial plexus. Sometimes TOS may affect the whole hand, arm, neck and even the side of the face. The ulnar nerve is the most commonly compressed and this supplies the inside of the elbow, the little finger and the ring finger so symptoms are often felt but not confined to these area. Symptoms of TOS may include arm numbness, pain, pins and needles, coldness or heaviness of the arm. In Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, the brachial plexus (a bundle of nerves) and far less often, the subclavian nerve or artery can become compressed by surrounding structures.

If the battery has already been replaced, the problem may be a failure with the keyless entry or the receiver logic board. The most common cause of failure in a keyless entry is a depleted battery. The wireless keyless entry and wired door control operate independently, so it is not uncommon for one device to work while the other does not. I am sure all of us remember the 1996 incident that involved a celebrated female gorilla. They don’t get violent unless they’re provoked. Western lowland gorillas are tender animals. It is common knowledge that gorillas are self-aware. I am no expert on anthrozoology, but Harambe’s behaviour may have been normal gorilla play. And some people feel that putting the ape to death was a rational choice. Some people believe Harambe was protecting the child in the same way a gorilla would protect its offspring. And that moment has been turned into a movement. It all happened in the span of approximately 10 minutes from the instant the boy fell into Harambe’s enclosure up until the decision to kill the primate. They later explained that tranquilising the gorilla was not an option there were risks associated with using a tranquiliser dart to sedate Harambe that could make him react dangerously. After evaluating the situation, zoo officials decided to kill Harambe instead of tranquilising him. In the video it can be seen that Harambe grabbed the child, tossed him around a few times and dragged him around the enclosure. But who would have thought that the primate would be shot to death the very next day? The reason this ape was killed was because a four-year-old fell into his enclosure. Harambe, an endangered western lowland gorilla had just turned 17. The severity of the incident depends on who you ask. The incident has garnered rage, an outpouring of online-hate, as well as the sympathies of many. "The loss of a breeding male is a big deal. The killing of a gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden on Friday has resulted in a total and complete social media meltdown. "It'll be a loss to the gene pool of lowland gorillas," Maynard said. That group manages the 360-odd gorillas in Association of Zoos and Aquariums facilities, with a goal of keeping the animals genetically diverse so that their populations are healthy and viable into the future. At 17, Harambe was not quite at breeding maturity, but the zoo had hoped to breed him in the future, director of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden Thane Maynard said Saturday. "He demonstrates intelligence and curiosity, using sticks and things to reach for items outside his grasp,” Ron Evans, curator of primates at the Cincinnati Zoo, said of Harambe in 2015.Įvans is part of the Species Survival Program management group for the species. The #CincinnatiZoo and big, new adventures are waiting for you, big boy!"Ī Cincinnati Zoo blog post from April 14, 2015, noted that Harambe had gotten too old to remain at Gladys Porter and had come to the Cincinnati Zoo to join a social group with females Chewie and Mara, who were both 19 at that time. It reads: "With a mixture of sad and happy feelings, we are preparing #Harambe, one of our #Silverback #WesternLowlandGorillas, for the journey to his new home. The 450-pound silverback western lowland gorilla was born at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, on May 27, 1999, and came to Cincinnati in September 2014.Ī post on the Gladys Porter Zoo's Facebook page from Sept.
